Writer Margaret Hasse received $900 to support a trip to Squaw Valley, California, to get new materials for poems. By attending the week-long Squaw Valley Poetry Writers Workshop she hopes to gain new vantages on her writing and benefit from intensive critical attention to her work.

Actor Charles Janasz received $2,800 to spend a month in India, studying Indian performing arts. Janasz's trip is intended to deepen his understanding of Indian culture, Eastern spirituality and theatrical techniques. He will divide his time among Trivandrum, Trichur, Madras and Delhi studying performance traditions such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam. He'll also visit the National School of Drama and the Sri Ram Center to gain a contemporary perspective on Indian theater.

Film/video Curator at the Walker Art Center, Bruce Jenkins received $3,700 to spend four to five weeks in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. He plans to encounter old films, recent video installations and new people; to access and screen archival prints; tour galleries and discuss the state of media exhibition with a diverse group of European curators, archivists and artists. The goal of the trip is both personal and professional renewal.

Doreen Johnson, a dyer and painter, received $3,200 for travel and study in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, California, and Seattle, Washington. Her purpose is to build a personal network of dyers/painters in the theater; investigate health and environmental practices and compare products used.

Film and video producer, director and editor Kathleen Laughlin received $2,640 to travel to Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. to conduct research for a film she's making on menopause. In Santa Cruz and the San Francisco Bay Area she'll visit with groups and individuals focused on women's health issues; in Boston she'll talk with researcher Sonja McKinley and visit the Mid-Life Women's Health Community and the Boston's Women's Health Collective. In Washington, DC, she'll spend time at the National Film Archives conducting research and examining old films on the subject.
