Writer Kathleen Coskran received $940 to spend a month in Montauk, New York, as a writer in residence at the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center. There she'll work on a collection of short stories focused on personal revelations that emerge in cross-cultural situations.

Multimedia artist Betsy Damon received $2,500 toward eight weeks of travel in China. For the last eight years, Damon has been creating metaphors and images of relationships between humans and water, studying how water functions to give and support life. She plans to visit a sacred water site in China to document the site, interview area residents and work with Dr. Mitchell Xiao, a biochemist at the Cheng Du University of Science and Technology. Damon hopes to understand how a water source becomes sacred. She'll compile imagery, myths and scientific information which will result in installation works, a book and a film which explores water sites in the world.

Musician and composer John Devine, received $2,500 to spend two weeks in New York City, studying extended conducting technique with composer/conductor Butch Morris. Devine will study conduction and induction, methods of conducting improvisational ensembles created by Morris. He plans to attend performances at night, in addition to studying with Morris and his ensemble during the day.

Writer Norita Dittberner-Jax received $3,000 to support four weeks of travel in Germany. She plans to visit Cologne, Munich, Berlin and Nuremberg, areas associated with particular facets of the Third Reich. The trip is central to a current prose/memoir work-in-progress entitled The Small Life Hidden in the Large.
