Dancer/choreographer Azande received funding to spend 90 days in New York City developing her skills through intensive study. She plans to take African dance classes at Lezley Dance and Skate School and Prowess Dance Arts Center. She'll take instruction from and observe rehearsals of the Movin' Spirits company, and work with filmmaker Amadou Ngom on a project documenting Senegalese dance.

Poet Michael Dennis Browne received $3,000 to support four weeks in the United Kingdom to explore largely unfamiliar areas of his country of origin and write about the experience. Browne left the British Isles 27 years ago. His desire is to respond to the long-term prompting of an inner voice and journey on foot in a number of landscapes.

Emilie Buchwald, editor and publisher of Milkweed Editions, received $1,000 to spend a week in Bologna, Italy to attend the Bologna Children's Book Fair. There she'll meet children's book editors from other countries and renew and update her knowledge on children's literature.

Performer and choreographer Joe Chvala was awarded $600 to spend a week studying tap rhythm in Boston and New York City. In New York City, he'll take classes at Brenda Buffalino's Woodpecker Studios, where he intends to study with Barbara Duffy, a member of the Manhattan Tap Orchestra. Chvala also will attend a summer tap festival in Boston
