Poet William Reichard received $4,000 to spend two months in San Francisco, California, to collaborate with printmaker and sculptor Richard Speiker and installation artist and sculptor Billie Grace Lynn. The three will develop a performance/installation which focuses on the multifaceted formation of personality, social/sexual identity and the perception of time. They plan to recreate the project in book form.

Actress Barbara Reid and playwright Patty Lynch received $3,760 to travel to Prague, Czechoslovakia, for two weeks. They will investigate, observe and work with Czech theater artists, particularly acclaimed actress and human rights activist Vlasta Chramostova. Their travels will support the development of a full-length theater piece, an homage to Chramostova and an exploration of women artists and censorship.

Filmmaker and writer Mark D. Ryan received $1,000 to attend the four-day Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. The purpose of his trip is immerse himself in an intense period of viewing films, and have the opportunity to see works that wouldn't normally be accessible. Ryan is interested in the history of silent film, which is a key element of this event.

Writer, photographer and cultural worker Sal Salerno received $5,000 to spend a month in Southern Italy to study Sicilian spiritual traditions that have had an impact on his cultural identity. Salerno will visit sacred sites en route to Festa dei Giudei (Feast of the Jews), a festival held during Holy Week in San Fratello, Sicily. He plans to study the desecration of Black Madonnas, which continues to occur in Italy, and keep a journal with narrative and images that reflect on the Italian American immigrant experience.

Joel Shepard, assistant director of the University Film Society, received $950 to spend six days in New York City to expand his knowledge of gay and lesbian film. Shepard plans to attend the Eighth Annual New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film Festival in September of 1994. The Festival will expand his knowledge of the field, thereby enhancing his participation in this facet of the Film Society's programming.
