Independent media arts consultant I. Karon Sherarts received $5,000 for travel and study in Australia and New Zealand for three months. The purpose of the trip is to study media arts education in contrasting settings and develop an understanding of Aboriginal-made video. In Australia, she plans to observe and teach in several primary and secondary schools, observe university teacher preparation programs and meet with artists, education departments and members of Australian Teachers of Media. In New Zealand, she'll observe at school sites and visit an innovative teacher education program in Hamilton.

Dane Stauffer, actor and playwright, received $4,000 to spend four weeks in London, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland. His purpose is to observe the London-based theater collective Gloria, as it creates a new piece, and attend company performances at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Stauffer hopes to expand his range as a singer, actor and writer, and help strengthen his professional network outside of the state.

Draper Pat Sullivan received $4,308 to spend twelve weeks in New York City working in the studio of costumer Barbara Matera. By assisting Matera in the creation of costumes for a Broadway production, Sullivan will enhance her own dressmaking skills.

Ballet instructor Marjorie Thompson was awarded $2,370 to spend three weeks in New York City studying the Pilates method with master teacher Romana Kryzanowska. The purpose of Thompson's trip is in-depth training that will lead to certification, qualifying her to teach the Pilates method in the Twin Cities.

Photographer JoAnn Verburg was awarded $1,222 to spend two weeks in Cuba, New Mexico, to move her photographic investigations in a new direction. Verburg will visit a close friend living on a Navajo reservation. The pictures she intends to take will be about the confluence, overlap and distinctions between two cultures.

Orchestra conductor Jeannine Wagar received $4,000 to spend five months in New York City, to continue intensive private study with David Gilbert, former associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic and current director of conducting at the Manhattan School of Music. Her work with Gilbert will focus on the major standard and contemporary orchestral and operatic repertoire, with an emphasis on advanced gestural training and stylistic interpretation from major conducing legacies and traditions. She also plans to observe rehearsals and attend concerts of the New York Philharmonic and other orchestras, and research new orchestral repertoire at music libraries in the city
