Jerome Foundation Welcomes New Directors Moira Brennan and Glyn Northington

Jerome Foundation, a Saint Paul-based, Minnesota and New York City arts funder, is honored to welcome two new directors to its board: Moira Brennan and Glyn Northington. Their experience and passionate commitment to artists and arts organizations strongly aligns with the Foundation’s focus on supporting early career artists across multiple artistic fields. Moira’s decades of leadership in artist-centered grantmaking, paired with her incisive writing on power, money, and creativity in contemporary culture, make her an exceptional thought partner. Glyn’s four decades in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector, and his particular fluency in equity-driven strategy, offer Jerome grounded, forward-looking counsel at a moment when both are essential.

Board of Directors Chair Lori Pourier and Member Chair Libby Hlavka shared their excitement, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Moira and Glyn to Jerome’s Board of Directors. They each bring deep experience, expansive networks, and a genuine commitment to supporting artists and the ecosystems that sustain them. We are equally grateful to Kate Barr for a decade of thoughtful, generous leadership that has shaped who Jerome Foundation is today.”

President and CEO Eleanor Savage added, “When I spoke with Moira and Glyn separately about joining the board, each answered with the very same words: 'I am ready.' All of us at Jerome are just as ready, and just as energized, to welcome them! They bring a wealth of insight, integrity, and imagination to our continued efforts in relational and responsive actions in philanthropy.”

Moira Brennan is the Director of Performance and Public Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. From 2002 to 2023 she was the director of the MAP Fund, a national artist-services and funding agency that provides support for contemporary performing artists. At MAP she also co-designed, with David Sheingold, the Scaffolding for Practicing Artist (SPA) program, which established a new model for highly tailored, horizontal one-to-one artist support practices and has now served more than 300 artists in performance, literature, filmmaking, and multi-genre practices.

Over her career, Moira has spoken widely on the complex interplay between creativity, art, power, and money in contemporary culture and philanthropy. A former editor at Ms. magazine, Moira has written about arts and social justice for a variety of publications. She is the former board chair of Movement Research, currently serves on the board of UnionDocs, and is a founding member of the Arts for Living Circle at Abrons Art Center.

Glyn Northington retired in 2023 after seven years at Propel Nonprofits as the Senior Program Director, and over 40 years working in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. His work at Propel was committed to supporting the nonprofit sector in Minnesota, including leaders facing new and unpredictable circumstances, while striving toward creating an equitable and just sector. Glyn has served as board chair of Grantmakers in the Arts and Theater Latté Da and was a founder of the Racial Equity Funders Collaborative.

As an executive leader, Glyn is known for his relationship management in philanthropy, reputation management, branding, and marketing. By combining expertise in planning and execution with collaboration and partnerships, he has provided key leadership in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

The Foundation also thanks former Director Kate Barr for her decade of service and her considerable contributions to the mission, strategy, and heart of Jerome. Kate served as board chair for four years, guiding the Foundation through a period of significant growth and reflection. “I’m deeply grateful to Kate Barr. Her rare blend of financial acumen, nonprofit organizational capacity-building experience, and deep love and respect for artists sharpened Jerome’s strategic direction, infused more heart into our practices, and inspired boldness and courage in our grantmaking,” said Savage.

Both Members and Directors, elected for multiple three-year terms, are essential partners in the work of the Foundation, contributing invaluable guidance on Jerome's journey toward equitable grantmaking and in support of its mission and values. The Members of the Jerome Foundation—a group of four individuals including both Hill family relations and individuals without kinship—are charged with preserving the legacy of the Founder, Jerome Hill, ensuring that the charitable purposes of the Foundation are observed, and electing the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors—comprised of working artists and arts administrators, as well as individuals whose professional lives and expertise lie outside of the arts (but who are deeply committed to the arts)—are vested in the governance, management, and direction of the Jerome Foundation, and approve all grants awarded by the Foundation.

Continuing their duties as Jerome Foundation board members are Board Chair Lori Pourier, Vice Chair Janet Wong, Treasurer Rick Scott, Secretary Daniel Alexander Jones, Salome Asega, Dr. Kate Beane, Sarah Bellamy, Helga Davis, and Sanjit Sethi; and continuing as Members are Chair Libby Hlavka, Linda Earle, Phyllis Rawls Goff, and Nick Slade.
